In 1997, her son was kidnapped near her own home. 24 years, 500,000 kilometers and ten worn-out motorcycles later, the family is finally reunited. A true story – not just how, but also from a film.
Guo Gangtang has never given up the search since his son was abducted by strangers near his home in 1997. Now, 24 years later, the family from eastern China is reunited and the two alleged kidnappers have been caught. This was reported by several media citing the state news agency ‘Xinhua’.
According to reports, the kidnapping of the then two-year-old Guo Xinzhen from Shandong Province in the east of the country caused a sensation across the country at the time. The little boy was abducted near his parents’ house 24 years ago. The authorities then intensively investigated, collected blood, DNA samples and other evidence – but there was no trace of Guo.
Father helps find more than 100 missing children during his search
Over the years, according to the police, the officers never shelved the case and repeatedly followed up on leads. Also – and above all – the father of the missing child did not give up the search. After his son disappeared, Guo Gangtang rode a motorcycle across the country. According to CNN, he only took a bag full of leaflets and a flag with his son’s picture on his long journey. He covered 500,000 kilometers in this way, used up all his savings and wore out ten motorcycles.
In 2015 the hitherto unsuccessful search picked up speed again when the film ‘Lost and Love’ with Hong Kong actor Andy Lau in the lead role brought the subject to the screen. Gangtang was still unable to find his son. Over the years, however, the tireless father helped the police with his numerous tips to track down more than 100 other kidnapped children.
Emotional reunion after more than two decades
On Sunday, the odyssey, which had lasted more than two decades, finally ended with a happy ending – in the same city where Guo disappeared in 1997. The authorities had found the now 26-year-old after clues in June and identified his relatives with his parents a DNA test can confirm.
The police have now released video recordings of the emotional reunion. In the pictures you can see the family hugging in tears. The authorities have arrested two suspects who are said to have already confessed to the kidnapping, it is said.
Son wants to continue living with adoptive parents
According to reports, Guo grew up with a married couple who, according to their own words, always treated him well. The 26-year-old wants to live with his adoptive parents in the future, but often visit his birth parents. ‘If the child wants to be loyal to his adoptive parents, then you just have to accept it openly and sincerely,’ said his father, according to the New York Times.
The news triggered a wave of enthusiasm in China. Hashtags about the family have been viewed hundreds of millions of times on social media. ‘Today’ Lost and Love ‘finally has a real happy ending,’ said the director of the film, Peng Sanyuan, in a video on Douyin, a social media app.
