The Youtubers Rezo and Julien Bam exchange ideas in a new podcast about what is happening in the social media world. In the NEON interview, they talked about their own usage habits, among other things.
Rezo and Julien Bam are known for their YouTube videos and streams. Now the two influencers are trying something new: in their podcast‘Hobbylos’do they want to talk weekly about their life and events in the social media world, sometimes with guests.
In the NEON interview, Rezo and Julien Bam talk about their own social media use, their personal record of the pandemic and the hobbies they don’t have time for.
Rezo: ‘I would really like to gamble through two or three days again’
You both actually come from the YouTube or streaming area. Is podcasting easier for you because you don’t have to pay too much attention to the look?
Julien Bam:For us it is actually pure relaxation not having to stand in front of the camera. When the camera is running, of course we also work with it because we know that we will be seen. With a podcast, it doesn’t matter what we look like. We could do the podcast almost naked.
I pray:Which doesn’t mean it’s basically easier. Of course, every form, whether it’s a cut challenge on Youtube, a stream on Twitch or a podcast, requires very individual skills. But some aspects of the podcast are more relaxed for us personally. We really look forward to being only heard and not seen. This is something that we normally don’t even know.
How much time do you spend on the social web yourself – what is your screen time?
Julien Bam:Unfortunately too high.(laughs.)
I pray:A few weeks ago I set myself up so that I can only be on TikTok, Instagram and Twitter for one hour a day.
Julien Bam:I just keep seeing you press ignore!
But an hour is really not much.
Julien Bam:Sometimes you really have to pull the brakes. It’s work for us too, we have to know what’s going on. But actually, it’s also a waste of time.
I pray:Being in the apps on your mobile phone is not productive. You only do this to keep yourself occupied. You are much more productive if you use WhatsApp on your computer, for example. That’s why I also issued the notifications on Whatsapp. Nobody will die if I don’t write back right away.
Do you also have times when you are completely offline?
I pray:When I go to work in the evening, I also enjoy saying: Now I’ll put my cell phone down for two hours, now I don’t have to work anymore. Then I look at it again the next day.
Which network or platform do you personally use the most?
Julien Bam:That sounds very superficial now, but for me it’s Instagram.
I pray:And when you go to the bathroom, do you go on Instagram? And what are you doing there? Reels or what?
Julien Bam:I don’t know either, I get so many things displayed there, so much advertising …
I pray:That irritates me a lot now. I think Instagram is not what you should be doing in the loo.
What are you doing in the toilet?
I pray:Formerly Youtube, now TikTok. Even when peeing. I’m on TikTok so quickly, you can’t imagine that – even if I’m making myself a coffee. This is this instinct of: I have a short idle time, TikTok on. This is sick.

Podcasts are extremely popular right now, a real trend medium. Why do you think that is so?
I pray:I think this has a lot to do with the pandemic. As a result, media use has changed to things that can be left running in the background.
Julien Bam:You can always associate podcasts with something – whether it’s sport, work in the kitchen, or cleaning up. This connection does not exist on YouTube, so you watch the video. And many podcasts take up topics that you can’t get anywhere else.
During the Corona period, many people had a lot of time – for example to look at things on YouTube or Twitch. Do you feel like the winners of the pandemic?
I pray:I would never agree with the term winner because the whole thing wasn’t a competition. But the industry we are in is definitely not one of those that suffered badly from the pandemic. We didn’t get a 10- or 20-fold boost like any drug company may have, but we’re definitely one of the lucky ones who hasn’t gone down dramatically.
You are both very interested in politics – Rezo, you became known beyond YouTube with your political videos and Julien, you were once a member of the Federal Assembly that elected the Federal President. Will politics be an issue in your podcast too?
I pray:Not primarily, but if it’s a topic that has kept us busy for the week, we of course talk about it. But we’re not going to talk about what has happened in the political world every week.
What can politicians and parties – especially on social media – do to get young people excited about politics or to win them over as voters?
I pray:I think that on social media, aspects such as transparency and honesty on a human level, with a human language, are even more important than, for example, at the federal press conference, where one speaks more to capital city journalists.
Where does the name ‘Hobbyless’ for your podcast come from?
Julien Bam:We have so little time that we will never have a hobby. Not because we’re lazy, but because our schedule is full from morning to night. It’s actually totally sad.
You can also see it differently: You have turned your hobby into a profession.
I pray:Of course you can see it that way. But I think everyone knows that who has chosen a job like this. There are also parts that are just work. Whenever we record something, those are the most beautiful moments. Yesterday we did a photo shoot, it was the best day in a long time. But having meetings and planning and organizing things – that has become bigger and bigger over the years. Sometimes you think to yourself: What am I actually doing here?
Julien Bam:The question is always what is dominating – the passion or the work. And then the hobby is sometimes masked by it. Then the hobby quickly turns into work.
What would you most like to do when you finally had time for a hobby?
I pray:(laughs.)Is that the first thing that comes to mind?
Julien Bam:Or golf.
I pray:I would love to play another game for two or three days. Just like before. Really lose yourself in a huge game and just search through it. And then you look at the clock and think: Oh, I’ve been gambling all day. I would be so happy to do it again.
