In many areas there are now products and devices that make life easier. What are currently the best smart home products?
Our living spaces are becoming more and more intelligent and independent: from mailboxes to heating to keyholes, almost everything can now be controlled or monitored remotely.According to a YouGov analysis every fourth German has installed at least one smart household appliance. But which functions are really useful? Technology fans shouldn’t miss these smart home products.
Before anyone interested can choose different products for their smart home, they should first decide on a smart home ecosystem, such as Apple HomeKit, Google Home or Samsung SmartThings. In this way, several areas can easily be controlled via one device or system.
Door locks, bells, surveillance cameras: for more security in the house
Live stream in full HD, recording and loudspeaker – this is what many smart doorbells offer. This means that a glance at the smartphone is enough to see who is at the door. The smart doorbell is easy to integrate: All you need is a WLAN connection, the current flows from the previous doorbell. One of the newest products on the market is the Smart Doorbell One X from Gigaset (170 euros), which also has a microphone, a motion detector and an infrared night vision function integrated.
The video doorbell can also be connected to the ‘Nuki Smart Lock 2.0’ electronic door lock from Nuki (199 euros). If you want to let someone into the house but are not at home yourself, you can do so using your smartphone. A real key is no longer necessary here – with the Nuki app, homeowners can easily unlock the door and even give virtual keys to family and friends. The app also provides a precise overview of who has locked the door and when, and whether the door has been locked correctly. If not – this can be done remotely via the app. The Nuki Smart Lock can be easily installed over the existing cylinder and key and requires neither screws nor drilling.
A surveillance camera, such as the Arlo Pro 3 (599 euros), offers even more security. With the dimensions 8.9 x 5.2 x 7.8 cm, it is small and inconspicuous, it also works via a WLAN connection, offers a 160-degree field of vision and has an alarm function and a small spotlight.
Light and heating controls: For the forgetful
Heating without falling into the cost trap? Smart heating and thermostats can help to minimize energy costs. Also ideal for forgetful people: Anyone who has gone on vacation and accidentally left the heating on at home can switch it off using the app. For example, with the smart heating control from Bosch: All you have to do is attach a thermostat to the heater and the room temperature can be controlled via the app.
It is similar with the light switch: With WLAN light switches, users can easily control or schedule the interior lighting of their home via their smartphone. You don’t even have to dig deep into your wallet for this: One of the best-rated WiFi light switches on the market, the Sonoff T0EU1C WiFi wall switch, is available for as little as 23 euros.
Washer, dryer, vacuum cleaner: for busy people
Washing clothes is arguably one of the most unpopular household chores. Especially annoying when you forget a wet load of laundry in the machine or the laundry does not fit into the daily routine. Smart washing machines can be controlled via smartphone app and some even offer cleaning tips or additional washing programs for download. One of the top devices on the market is the Siemens WLAN washing machine WM14U840EU (from 769 euros), which can not only be operated via the app, but also sends push notifications to the smartphone at the end of the wash cycle or when the detergent is running low.
If you want to protect your back and prefer to leave the vacuuming to others, you should get a vacuum cleaner robot. It can do the unpopular housework while you are not at home and removes everything from crumbs to animal hair. Don’t worry about stairs or valuable heirlooms: the robot vacuum cleaner knows where it can or should clean itself, and no-go zones can be defined using an app. Some smart vacuum cleaners even have an integrated wiping function, such as the DEEBOT OZMO 950 from Ecovacs (390 euros).
