Food at Workplaces Negatively Impacts the Health Says CDC

The food that is offered at the workplaces as a perk may taste delicious and look healthy, but that may not be the reality. A study done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that it has negative impacts on the health of people.

CDC says that the food provided in the workplaces usually has a low nutritional value. They have high calories, added sugars, refined grains, and sodium. The snacks and meals that are served through vending machines and from the cafeterias were analyzed for this study. For this survey done in 2012-13, there were 5,222 participants. As per this, almost a quarter of the employees go for food and beverages at the offices at least once a week time. The average weekly calories in these foods were found to be 1,292.

Stephen J. Onufrak, who is a Ph.D. and a lead CDC investigator, said that employers can make it possible to provide healthy foods in the vending machines and cafeterias and also at social events, meetings, etc. by incorporating healthy meeting policies and food service guidelines.

Improvement in nutritional quality of the foods at workplaces can be a key factor when it comes to worksite wellness efforts. Low food quality leads to obesity and other issues which lead to chronic diseases like diabetes, cancer, heart failures, etc. These diseases are a leading cause for deaths in the US. Treatment of these diseases costs up to 84 %.

As recorded in 2010, 3 in every 10 adults were obese. They had a low consumption of fruits and vegetables. They also reported being having very less physical activity compared to other adults. About 150 million adults in the US are working today and worksite wellness efforts should be employed for the betterment of their health. They can help prevent chronic diseases. Wherever employed, these programs have effectively helped to change health behaviors. It helps in reducing absenteeism and also their healthcare costs.
